Zorro, The Gay Blade is a 1981 swashbuckling comedy film from 20th Century Fox, produced by C.O. Erickson and George Hamilton, directed by Peter Medak, that stars George HamiltonLauren HuttonRon Leibman, and Brenda Vaccaro.
George Hamilton was nominated for a Golden Globe award for playing the dual role of both Don Diego de la Vega (Zorro) and his gay twin brother Bunny Wigglesworth, né Ramon de la Vega.
In 1840s MadridSpain, the womanizer Don Diego de la Vega is in bed with a married woman. They are caught by her husband, Garcia, and Diego must sword fight him and his five brothers. During the altercation, Diego's muteservant Paco reads (via gestures) a letter from Diego's father ordering Diego's return to California. Diego and Paco jump from a high wall into a waiting carriage.
When the two arrive in Los Angeles, they are met by Diego's childhood friend Esteban, who is now capitán of the guard. He has married Florinda, for whom the men competed when they were boys. Diego learns that his father was killed in a riding accident, his horse "frightened by a turtle". Esteban is the acting alcalde until the Dons elect a replacement.
Esteban is selected via a fixed election and gives his speech to the assembled peasants. He is interrupted by Charlotte Taylor-Wilson, a wealthy political activist from Boston. She and Diego meet, and despite their political differences, there is an immediate attraction.
Diego is invited to a masked ball celebrating Esteban's elevation. He also receives his inheritance: Zorro's black cape, hat, and sword, with a note from his late father revealing that he was Zorro. Diego decides it is the perfect costume for the ball.
On his way there, Diego witnesses a peasant being robbed. He confronts and defeats the highwayman and returns the money to the peasant, instructing him to spread the word that El Zorro has returned.
Diego, in Zorro costume, dances with Florinda at the ball while the peasant informs the people that Zorro has returned. The robber was Velasquez, the tax collector, who reports the theft to Alcalde Esteban, pointing to Diego as Zorro. A duel ensues, and Diego escapes by again jumping from a high wall, but he injures his foot this time and hobbles away.
Later that night, a drunk Florinda attempts to seduce Diego, but Esteban arrives to speak about the events of the evening. Esteban suspects that Diego is Zorro, but Diego is able to convince him that his foot is uninjured.
A reign of terror begins, including torture and increased taxation. Diego is frustrated because being injured, he cannot fulfill his destiny as Zorro. Diego summons his fey, foppish, and British-educated twin brother Ramon Vega, who joined the Royal Navy, adopting the name Bunny Wigglesworth. Diego brings him up to date, and Bunny agrees to stand in as Zorro, using a whip instead of a sword, while also wearing colorful Zorro attire.
Zorro always eludes capture. Esteban hatches a plan to lure Zorro to the alcalde's residence with another ball to show off Florinda's expensive new necklace. Seeing through the plan, Diego arrives dressed as Zorro, and so do the rest of the Dons and male party guests, telling Esteban that a mysterious servant instructed them to all dress as Zorro. Adding to the confusion, Bunny appears in drag, masquerading as "Margarita" Wigglesworth, Diego's cousin from Santa Barbara. Esteban is smitten. Bunny spills a drink on Florinda, and in the resulting chaos attempts to clean her dress, making off with the necklace. As Bunny returns to the Royal Navy, he informs Diego that Charlotte Taylor-Wilson is in love with Zorro.
At the plaza, Zorro and Charlotte confess their love for each other, but are overheard by one of Esteban's operatives. Esteban has her arrested, and she is sentenced to death. Zorro surrenders to Esteban in order to save Charlotte, and Diego is sentenced to death.
Seconds before Diego is to be shot, Bunny returns as Zorro, and with Charlotte's aid they incite the peasants to rebellion. Esteban's guards also rebel, joined by Florinda, and Esteban is defeated. Bunny rides off to catch his ship back to England, and Diego and Charlotte ride off to settle in Boston and plan their wedding.
